Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association's National Walk at Lunch Day is April 24
Baltimore, MD (April 18, 2013) - Turn your working lunch into a walking lunch – if just for a day.
CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (CareFirst), the region’s largest health insurer, is encouraging its members and fellow employers throughout the Baltimore-Washington, D.C., area to step out of their cubicles and corner offices to participate in the sixth annual National Walk at Lunch Day on April 24.
As many as 1,000 CareFirst employees are expected to lace up their sneakers for at least a 15-minute walk outside 16 CareFirst offices in the mid-Atlantic region. The event will promote a wellness initiative started by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) in 2007 and supported by tens of thousands of walkers from all 50 states and the District of Columbia last year.
National Walk at Lunch Day is a program CareFirst and other Blues health plans joined to help members and other employers build routine wellness habits by taking a few minutes out of their busy workdays to walk or do another physical activity. Walking for 30 minutes at least five times a week can lower the risk of developing or dying from heart disease, hypertension or type 2 diabetes.
“It may not be common knowledge, but several 10-minute brisk walks a day can lower your blood pressure,” said Dr. Daniel Winn, CareFirst Vice President and Senior Medical Director. “Every choice we make to use the steps, park further away or take a short walk daily can be used to improve our health.”
