What is Prediabetes?

With prediabetes, blood glucose levels are higher than normal. But they’re not yet high enough for a diabetes diagnosis. It’s possible you may even have symptoms of diabetes. If you think you could have prediabetes, check with your doctor to see if you should get tested. You can use some of the questions below to guide your conversation. In these situations, knowledge is power—the power to change things.

What Do I Ask the Doctor?

When you visit the doctor, it helps to have questions written down ahead of time. You can also ask a family member or friend to go with you to take notes. It may help to come prepared with a list of questions at your next appointment. Here are a few to get you started.

  • Do you recommend that I get tested for prediabetes or type 2 diabetes?
  • What are the warning signs and symptoms of type 2 diabetes?
  • Can you give me some tips for preventing type 2 diabetes?
  • If I'm overweight, how much weight do I need to lose to lower my risk?
  • What are some healthy ways to lose weight and keep it off?
  • What changes can I make to my diet to help delay or prevent type 2 diabetes?

Are You at Risk?

Approximately 1 in 3 Americans has prediabetes, but more than 80% don’t know they have it. Take the CDC Risk Test

If I’m at Risk, is Type 2 Diabetes Inevitable?

If you do have prediabetes, it doesn’t mean you’ll develop type 2 diabetes. Especially if you follow a treatment plan and make changes to your lifestyle. That can include smarter food choices and making movement a daily habit. Even small changes can have a huge impact on delaying or preventing diabetes.

Diabetes in Pregnancy

Some people have diabetes before they get pregnant. This is called pregestational diabetes. Other people may get a type of diabetes that only happens in pregnancy. This is called gestational diabetes. Pregnancy can change how a person's body uses glucose. This can make diabetes worse or lead to gestational diabetes. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Overweight people are more likely to have gestational diabetes.
  • Gestational diabetes is more common in people who had gestational diabetes during a prior pregnancy, or who have a family member with type 2 diabetes.
  • Multifetal pregnancies (twins, triplets, and so on) have higher rates of gestational diabetes.
  • Gestational diabetes often occurs without the classic symptoms of diabetes- many people don’t know they have it until they get tested.
