CareFirst Awarded Best of Blues for FEP Member Service for 14 Consecutive Years

First Ever Recipient of FEP Best Practice Award

Baltimore, MD (January 13, 2012) - CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (CareFirst), for the 14th consecutive year, has received the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association’s (BCBSA) ‘Best in Blue’ award in recognition of excellent customer service for members of the Federal Employee Program (FEP).  This year’s award continues the company’s record streak and was one of five service awards presented to CareFirst FEP employees.  The awards were presented in separate ceremonies to employees in Owings Mills, Md., Washington, D.C., and Charleston, West Virginia.

“Not every Blues Plan receives an award each year, but CareFirst has for 14 straight years and that is a reflection of the people who deliver the service and the team they represent,” said Fred Plumb, CareFirst Senior Vice President of the Federal Employee Program Administrative Service Unit (ASU).  “Service excellence is a major emphasis throughout the company, and our focus in FEP is to treat our members with respect, deliver a quality service, and at a good price relative to others.”

The FEP Excellence Awards are presented annually by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) to honor member plans that provide excellent service to federal employees.  The awards focus on the service profile, strategic profile, claims and customer service performance, keeping benefit and administrative costs low, and growing membership.

This year, the awards were presented by BCBSA Director of Account Management for FEP, Jeff Defibaugh during a breakfast celebration at CareFirst offices in Owings Mills.

“I can’t thank you enough for keeping your performance as high as you did going through the challenges of implementing a new system,” said Defibaugh.  “Not all plans would have been able to maintain their excellent service while going through a system migration – I think you surprised many people."

CareFirst FEP won the following awards:

  • FEP Best Practice Award, CareFirst
  • Best of Blue Plan Excellence Award, FEP D.C. service area
  • Excellence Service Profile for Maryland service area
  • Excellence Service Profile for D.C. service area
  • Strategic Profile, D.C. service area
