Medi-CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield Ranks Among Highest Plans in the Area
Medi-CareFirst received 4.5 stars out of 5 for Medicare Part D Plan
Baltimore, MD (October 30, 2012) - Medi-CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (Medi-CareFirst) has received 4.5 stars out of a possible 5 star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), one of the highest ranked plans in the mid-Atlantic region. The rating was for the insurer’s Medi-CareFirst BlueRx Prescription Drug (Part D) plans.
The CMS Medicare program annually rates all health and prescription drug plans based on a plan's quality and performance in four categories: customer service, member complaints and Medicare audit findings, drug pricing and patient safety, and member experience (ease in filling prescriptions and prompt resolution of member issues). Plans are rated from 1 to 5 stars, with 5 representing “excellent performance.”
The 4.5 star rating for Medi-CareFirst this year is an improvement over last year’s 4 star rating, for both of the plans offered — BlueRx Standard and BlueRx Enhanced. CMS recently released the plan ratings to help assist customers in choosing benefits during open enrollment season, which runs from October 15 to December 7. Medicare beneficiaries can use the plan ratings to compare Medi-CareFirst’s performance to other plans in the region. These ratings can be viewed on Medicare.gov through the Plan Finder tool www.medicare.gov/find-a-plan.
Medi-CareFirst is a subsidiary of CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, offering prescription drug plans to Medicare beneficiaries in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Delaware. Medi-CareFirst’s BlueRx prescription drug plans have about 23,000 members enrolled in either the BlueRx Standard or BlueRx Enhanced. CMS Plan Performance Star Ratings are assessed each year and may change from one year to the next.
