CareFirst Breaks Record for Greater Baltimore Heart Walk

CareFirst raises over ­­­­­$500,000 for the American Heart Association’s regional events

Baltimore, MD (November 14, 2012) - Employees of CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (CareFirst) raised over $500,000 for the American Heart Association (AHA) this fall, including the greatest amount ever raised by a single company in support of the Greater Baltimore Heart Walk for heart disease prevention and education programs. CareFirst’s contribution to the Greater Baltimore Heart Walk, held Oct. 20 in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and chaired by CareFirst President and CEO Chet Burrell, helped the event raise over $1.4 million, surpassing its goal of $1.23 million.

The company’s donation to the AHA – including money raised by employees and a $75,000 corporate sponsorship – is among the top 10 nationwide this year.

CareFirst employees participated in other AHA Heart Walks this fall in Washington, D.C.; Charleston, W.Va.; and Charlotte, N.C. CareFirst’s total contribution includes funds from the company’s matching grant program — which matched each employee’s contribution dollar for dollar, up to $500.

“It took individual people, from in and around Baltimore, to make a difference," said Burrell. "We had bake sales and tricycle races and pie-throwing contests, and the sum of all of that was a successful campaign that will change the lives of many who are affected by heart disease and stroke.”

Many Baltimore-area companies participated in the Greater Baltimore Heart Walk, including Johns Hopkins Medicine, MedStar Health and Bravo Health. More than 7,000 people attended the Baltimore Walk – another event record. “We are excited about the hard work CareFirst and other companies have done to help this year’s walk be a major success,” said Yvette Mingo, Executive Director and Vice President of the American Heart Association Greater Baltimore region. “It is companies like CareFirst that allow us to continue to fight cardiovascular disease and stroke.”
