CareFirst Promotes Meryl Burgin to Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary
Randy Sergent replaces Burgin as Vice President and Deputy General Counsel
Baltimore, MD (January 9, 2013) - CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (CareFirst) has promoted Meryl Burgin to Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, replacing John Picciotto, who retired from the position Dec. 31 after 37 years with the company. Burgin also replaced Picciotto as secretary of CareFirst’s Board of Directors.
Burgin has been with CareFirst for more than 20 years, most recently serving as Vice President and Deputy General Counsel. Throughout her time at CareFirst, Burgin has provided valuable legal guidance on such corporate initiatives as creation of the company’s Patient-Centered Medical Home program and its adoption of the federal health reform law passed in 2010.
With Burgin’s promotion, CareFirst also announced that Randy Sergent has been elevated to Burgin’s former position of Vice President and Deputy General Counsel. Since joining the company from Venable LLP in 2010, Sergent has helped the company comply with many regulatory and legislative issues included in the health reform law. Sergent previously served as CareFirst’s Senior Director and Assistant General Counsel.
“I am pleased to have people of Meryl’s and Randy’s background and caliber on our management team and filling these critical roles in our company,” said Chet Burrell, CareFirst President and CEO. “They have been key contributors on many fronts, and their knowledge and experience will be greatly needed as we continue to implement the provisions of health reform and move ahead with many other important initiatives.”
