Important Notice

In this tutorial, you will learn about consumer directed health plans and health accounts, such as Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Health Reimbursement Arrangements (HRAs). The IRS recently released guidance regarding how health care reform legislation affects health accounts. The guidance states that beginning in 2011 the cost of an over-the-counter medicine or drug cannot be reimbursed from a health account (HSA, HRA or FSA) without a prescription. The change does not affect insulin, even if purchased without a prescription, or eligible medical equipment or supplies that are not medicines or drugs. These changes are not yet reflected in the tutorial.

These eligibility changes will be effective January 1, 2011.

  • Items that will become ineligible for health care account reimbursement without a prescription include acid controllers, cough, cold and flu medicines, pain relief medications and sleep aids.
  • Items that will remain eligible for health care account reimbursement without a prescription include crutches, eye and ear care supplies, first aid dressings and supplies, insulin and other medical supplies.

For more information, read Questions and Answers from the IRS.

Health Risk Assessments

A health risk assessment is a questionnaire that asks about your age, habits, recent test results and medical history. Based on your answers, the assessment will explain your risk factors and suggest changes you can make to improve and maintain your health. Then you can share the results with your doctor and develop a plan. The results of the health risk assessment are confidential.

You may have two options for health risk assessments:
My Care First - All members have access to a variety of online quizzes and tools to assess your risk for illness and identify steps you can take to reduce your risk.
MyHealthProfile - Your employer may offer a confidential health risk assessment as part of your benefits package. Information will be available in your open enrollment materials or from your employer. If you purchase your own insurance, you will receive a letter telling you how to take the Health risk assessment. You'll receive a personalized health report that alerts you to possible health risks and offers tips on how to stay healthy. Depending on the results of your questionnaire, you may have the option to participate in programs designed to reduce your risk of developing illness or to manage any condition you may already have.
