CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield Announces New HealthyBlue Advantage Plan
Encouraging a healthy lifestyle and rewarding members for being healthy
Baltimore, MD (August 27, 2012) - CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (CareFirst) has introduced its latest HealthyBlue product - called HealthyBlue Advantage - designed to give members more control and choice over the care they receive, while lowering out-of-pocket costs and rewarding them for living a healthy lifestyle. The new HealthyBlue Advantage product is designed to bring an innovative approach to health care that offers members affordable rates for quality care both in and out of CareFirst's service area.
"HealthyBlue Advantage is a new genre of health care coverage that combines a strong emphasis on primary care with wellness and care coordination," said CareFirst President and CEO Chet Burrell. "HealthyBlue is a plan where members and providers together have the control to help reduce health care costs. With financial incentives that reward members who work to manage their health decisions, we see this plan as an essential step to controlling health care costs and focusing on improving the health status of our members."
CareFirst began selling HealthyBlue Advantage products to employer groups August 1, and the product will be available to individuals beginning September 1.
HealthyBlue Advantage allows members who live or travel outside of CareFirst's service area (Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia) to receive in-network coverage. When seeking care in the CareFirst service area, members have access to more than 33,000 CareFirst BlueChoice HMO providers and 60 hospitals. When outside the service area, HealthyBlue Advantage members have access to more than 600,000 BlueCard PPO providers - a program offered through the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association.
HealthyBlue Advantage includes many features that aim to increase access to care and help control health care costs. They include:
- Fewer out-of-pocket expenses for medical services (many services have a $0 copay such as adult physical exams, routine OB/GYN exams, lab tests, X-rays, sick visits to a primary care physician, cancer screenings and well-child visits).
- Financial rewards for members who take steps to improve their health (up to $700 for a family and $300 for an individual).
- No referrals to visit a specialist.
- New health and wellness discounts to help members lead a healthier life.
"Since launching the HealthyBlue program two years ago, the product has become increasingly popular among CareFirst customers," Burrell said. "With more individuals and employer groups looking for ways to lower their benefit costs while continuing to offer quality health coverage, CareFirst expects HealthyBlue Advantage to perform strongly."
In its 75th year of service, CareFirst, an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, is a not-for-profit health care company which, through its affiliates and subsidiaries, offers a comprehensive portfolio of health insurance products and administrative services to 3.4 million individuals and groups in Maryland, the District of Columbia and Northern Virginia.
