Opioids and Addiction Support

Understanding Opioids

By educating and helping those who struggle with opioid dependence, CareFirst is working to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our members and the people they love. In this section, you’ll find information to help better understand opioids, alternatives for pain management and where to find additional resources and support.

Opioids are a class of drugs that doctors can prescribe to treat moderate to severe pain. Common types include oxycodone (OxyContin®), hydrocodone (Vicodin®), codeine, morphine and methadone.
